The street

Bengaluru’s eat street, in 200 metres

Locals call it Thindi Beedi, Kannada for “eat street”. It’s the short, narrow stretch in VV Puram that runs from RV Road to Sajjan Rao Circle, lined with carts and small eateries: 37 stalls along 200 metres when the city counted in 2022.

The BBMP has since redone the street with new paving, lighting and planters. Bins, handwash points and drinking water are still thin on the ground, so carry a bottle of water and walk your plate to a bin.

  • Where: VV Puram, between RV Road and Sajjan Rao Circle
  • When: Late afternoon until around midnight; it fills up from 5 pm
  • Busiest: Weekend evenings
  • Nearest metro: National College, Green Line
  • Budget: In 2020 most dishes cost ₹10 to ₹200; expect a bit more now
What to eat

The order of play

  • Holige (obbattu). Flat, sweet and stuffed, the dish the street is best known for.
  • Akki rotti. Rice-flour rotti, crisp at the edges.
  • Paddu. Soft little rounds from a dimpled pan, also called guliyappa.
  • Bangarpet masala puri and chaats. For when you want something loud.
  • Gulkand. Rose-petal preserve, usually with ice cream. Shivanna Gulkhand Centre is the long-standing name for it.
  • A drink to finish. Badam milk, rose milk, or a seasonal juice from Sree Ganesha Fruit Juice Centre.
  • A Congress bun for the road. VB Bakery, where the street begins, has been known for its Congress-butter buns for years.
⏰
Go on a weekday around 5 pm. The stalls are just firing up and you won’t be queueing behind half of Basavanagudi. Weekend evenings get packed, and seats are few.

Getting there

Take the Namma Metro Green Line to National College; the walk is about 12 minutes. Buses stop at National College too. Leave the bike at home if you can: it’s a narrow street and it fills up fast in the evening.

Coming in December? Avarekai Mela

Late December brings the Avarekai Mela to National College Grounds in Basavanagudi: a festival of dishes made with avarekai, the winter bean, run for years by the Vasavi Institute. Its 26th edition opened on 27 December 2025, so watch for this year’s dates in December.
